The bridge built in 1967 will eventually be obsolete as the river feeding the lagoon shortens due to sea erosion and the bay widens due to glacial melting
but by 1916 eruptions had all but ceased except in the few instances of artificially generated eruptions (by pouring soap into the channel)
but is now a protected nature site
